The Fitness Level
I hadn't been near a yoga mat for about two years, and a painful ski injury four months earlier had left me feeling very out of shape and lumpy.

The Workout Bit

The lynchpin of Vitality week is Kundalini Yoga teacher Maya Fiennes. An eccentric, Macedonian-boren former concert pianist, she is known for her unique approach to yoga, which incorporates song, chanting, breathing and movement.

It leaves you feeling light-headed euphoric and sometimes emotional - it's not uncommon for people to burst into tears during her classes. Over the week she moves through your body's different chakras, working on each in turn. By the end you feel a stretchier stress-free version of yourself.

Classes are held in a small pavilion set back from the beach, or on the wooden jetty, and accompanied by Maya's hypnotic music and the sound of chattering tropical birds.

The rest of the day can be spent working up a sweat on one of the nine tennis courts, doing circuits on the beach and swimming in the hotel's enormous free-form pool - or the glassy-clear sea fronting it.
